What You Definitely Need to Visit in Alicante: The Most Interesting Places in the Resort

Historical Attractions

When talking about Alicante and its interesting places, one cannot overlook one of the main architectural landmarks — the Santa Bárbara Castle (Santa Bárbara). It is perched on the peak of the rocky Benacantil mountain (166 meters above sea level). The history of this site spans over 1,000 years and is, of course, surrounded by legends. Today, the fortress has several observation decks, each offering stunning views of the city, the sea, and the port. Entry to the castle is completely free — you only pay for certain exhibitions. It is best to visit this attraction in the morning, when there are still no large queues.

Speaking of other interesting places in Alicante, museums are also worth mentioning. The MARQ Archaeological Museum features interactive exhibitions covering the prehistoric period and the Middle Ages. Another fascinating spot is the MACA Museum of Contemporary Art, which displays works by famous 20th-century Spanish artists. It is best to visit on weekdays before 12:00.

Old Town and Walks

A wonderful idea for a city walk is to explore the streets of the Barrio de Santa Cruz quarter, located on the slope of the same mountain as the castle. You can start your walking route from Calle Labradores, where many bars and cafés offer delicious drinks and traditional Spanish tapas. Be sure to stroll through the cozy alleys and descend to the Basílica de Santa María, a historic church built in a mix of Gothic and Baroque styles. We recommend ending your route on the lively Calle Mayor, which is home to numerous shops — a true paradise for shopaholics. In addition, this area contains some of the best restaurants in Alicante that are definitely worth visiting. Among the most popular are: Las Brasas de San Miguel, La Crispeta, and El Gosto del Gourmet. Here you can try traditional Spanish cuisine, including popular rice dishes. These places look especially beautiful in early May during the Cruces de Mayo flower festival, when the streets are decorated with incredible floral compositions.

Free Attractions in Alicante

If you are looking for interesting places in Alicante, nothing beats natural and infrastructural attractions — and the best part is that they can be visited completely free of charge. For example, the large city park El Parque El Chaparral. It features pedestrian and cycling paths and is an excellent place for calm evening walks. The Mirador del Mar observation deck is located near Postiguet Beach and is perfect for photos and walks.

Market and Promenade

Be sure to visit the Mercat Central d’Alacant (Central Market). It is located in the very center of the city, about a 10-minute ride on public transport (routes No. 9 and 3) from our apartments. Looking for unique attractions in Alicante? This is the perfect spot. It has an incredible atmosphere: bright colors, a huge variety of vegetables, fruits, seafood, meat, cheese, and sausages. And the aromas! Just don’t come here hungry. Only food products are sold here — no goods or souvenirs. On the square behind the market, you can buy a charming bouquet of flowers.

And, of course, the famous promenade paved with white, black, and red mosaic tiles, lined with palm trees and running alongside the famous port. There are also many souvenir shops, small restaurants, and cafés with local cuisine, as well as ice cream of all kinds.
