Waterfalls of Alicante

Водопады Аликанте

Alicante Province leads the way in Spain in terms of the number of beaches, many of which have been awarded the Blue Flag. This means they have passed inspection on more than 30 parameters, the most important of which are water and sand cleanliness, safety, comfort, and service. However, this does not mean that the only available recreation in this Valencian Community is relaxing on the sand and swimming. There are many other interesting places worth visiting. Among them are the waterfalls of Alicante. In this article, we will take a closer look at which ones are nearby, how to get to them, and how to spend your time there productively.

List of the Most Famous Waterfalls

Waterfalls of Algar

These are considered one of the most visited places in the province. Nearby is the village of Callosa d’en Sarrià. There are several towns close by: Polop is 8 km away, La Nucia is about 10 km, and Altea is 12 km. The distance to Alicante Airport is 72 km.

The waterfalls are part of a natural park formed along the banks of the Algar River. This place is ideal for those who appreciate crystal-clear water and picturesque mountain landscapes. The waterfalls are multi-level, with the tallest reaching almost 40 meters. You can refresh yourself in natural pools with crystal-clear water. Many of our guests visited the waterfalls in July, when the water temperature was around 17°C. The local natural scenery combines perfectly with well-developed infrastructure. There are both paid and free parking areas, a campsite, bars and restaurants, a barbecue zone where you can prepare your own snacks, numerous souvenir shops, a first-aid point, and, of course, toilets.

The territory is open from 9:00 to 20:00. Please note that entry is paid: €5 for adults, €4 for students and pensioners. Children’s tickets (ages 4 to 10) cost €2, and children under 3 enter free.

If you are visiting this Alicante waterfall with children, we also recommend stopping by the nearby Dino Park. There you can also see fossil excavations, a cinema, and comfortable benches for resting. As part of a one-day itinerary, you can also visit the Alicante Zoo.

Font de la Coveta Waterfalls

Located on the Vinalopó River, within the Sierra de Mariola Natural Park in Alicante, which covers an area of 17,257 hectares. Many hiking trails run through the area. The air is filled with wonderful aromas of pine and yew trees. All of this, combined with the beauty of the cascading water, creates a feeling of complete peace and tranquility.

The most convenient way to get here from Alicante is by car via the A-70/AP-7 highway towards Villena/Onil, then take the exit onto CV-80 towards Onil/Castalla, and then follow CV-8153 to Banyeres de Mariola and the Sierra de Mariola Natural Park. Parking is available near the park’s information center or by the town.

Entry to the waterfalls is free, and the area is open 24 hours a day. The infrastructure here is less developed — there are no official ticket offices or security. You are personally responsible for your own safety.

El Salt Tourist Area: Waterfalls and Lagoons

Another interesting site is the El Salt waterfalls near the town of Xixona (Xixona). To get there, head towards the town cemetery. You can park right after the El Salt road sign. From there, continue on foot — the walk to the lagoon is about 4 km from the center of Xixona. Here you can discover stunning natural objects where emerald-colored water combines beautifully with mountain scenery. The mountain waterfalls reach a height of 20 meters, and there are places for swimming.

It is 28 km from Alicante. Within the protected area there are equipped recreation spots, a small parking area, and an observation deck. You can descend to the ponds via a safe path with railings. The local waters are home to beautiful fish, crabs, and turtles.

The El Salt waterfalls are part of a natural zone, so entry is free. However, during the high season, a small parking fee may apply.

Gorg del Salt Waterfall

Rounding off the ranking of Alicante waterfalls is Gorg del Salt. It is located in the L’Encantà gorge, near the village of Planes. There is a natural swimming pool in the form of a lagoon, and the area also has many water-filled ravines that do not dry up throughout the year.

The easiest way to get there is by car along the CV-700 road. Enter “Gorg del Salt” into your navigator. There is parking on site where you can leave your car, but you will need to continue on foot. A stepped descent leads to the lagoon with waterfalls. Here you can enjoy rocky landscapes and cool waters — all the conditions for an impressive getaway.

As for infrastructure, there are no cafés or restaurants in the gorge or near the waterfalls, as it is a natural area. It is therefore best to bring water and snacks with you. The nearest food options are in the village of Planes. We recommend the bar-grill in Planes — a convenient place for lunch after your walk — or BAR NOU CATALÀ, a popular and inexpensive café in the same village.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the Waterfalls

The ideal time to visit the waterfalls in Alicante is spring, as there is more water at this time. Summer is also good, but the flow is smaller. Autumn is comfortable because it is not hot, although it can be slippery, so we recommend bringing suitable footwear: trekking boots or water sandals.
