Many of them are amazing buildings that preserve the memory of centuries-old confrontations, emphasize the strategic importance of the region, and also recall the cultural influence of the inhabitants in different periods of history (from the Romans to the Christian kings). In this article, we will give real tips on which castles are worth visiting and what attracts each of them.
Historical information about the castles of Alicante: why are there so many of them?
The fact is that the territory of the modern province was a place of active military operations and trade routes in the Middle Ages. Many of the castles were built between the 9th and 14th centuries, and over time, they were modernized to reflect the influences of different eras, from Arab fortifications to Christian fortifications. However, the primary purpose of the castles in Alicante was to serve as strongholds, providing reliable protection and control over the territory and facilitating safe trade in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean.
